As the clock strikes midnight on December 31st, many of us embrace the new year with lofty resolutions—losing weight, exercising more, saving money. But how many times have these promises to ourselves fizzled out by February? If you’ve ever felt the sting of unmet resolutions, you’re not alone. This year, let’s try something different. Let’s reframe how we approach the new year by focusing on small, meaningful habits rather than overwhelming, all-or-nothing goals.

I used to set the bar high! One year, my resolution was to hit the gym every single day after work. By February, though, the guilt of missing a few days felt so heavy that I ended up giving up completely. It wasn’t until I shifted my approach—focusing on small, meaningful changes and realistic goals—that I finally started seeing progress that stuck.

Why Traditional Resolutions Fail

Resolutions often come from a place of dissatisfaction or pressure. We aim too high, too fast, expecting immediate results. But true, lasting change is rarely about grand gestures. It’s about consistency and sustainability.

This is where the principles of Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg and Atomic Habits by James Clear come into play. These methods focus on building momentum through small, manageable actions that compound over time to create significant change.

A Holistic Approach to Goal Setting

Holistic goal setting is about aligning your goals with your values, priorities, and overall well-being. It’s not about becoming someone you’re not but rather about enhancing who you already are.

Here’s how to start:

1. Reflect and Realign

Before setting any goals, take a moment to reflect. What went well in the past year? What didn’t? What do you value most in life—health, relationships, growth, or joy? Use this clarity to set goals that feel meaningful and aligned with your true self.

2. Start Small

Instead of a vague resolution like “get healthy,” break it down into small, actionable steps. For example:

  • Drink one glass of water upon waking each morning.

  • Add one vegetable to your lunch daily.

  • Take a 5-minute walk after dinner.

These micro-actions are easier to sustain and will snowball into larger changes over time.

One year, I started with a simple habit: drinking a glass of lemon water first thing in the morning. This small action made me feel accomplished and set a positive tone for the day. Over time, it snowballed into bigger health improvements.

3. Anchor New Habits

Use the concept of habit stacking to integrate new habits into your routine. Pair your new habit with something you already do. For instance:

  • “After brushing my teeth, I will write down one thing I’m grateful for.”

  • “While waiting for my coffee to brew, I will do three deep breaths.”

4. Focus on Identity, Not Outcomes

Shift your mindset from achieving to becoming. Instead of saying, “I want to run a marathon,” say, “I am becoming someone who enjoys running.” This identity-based approach fosters a deeper connection to your goals.

5. Embrace Flexibility

Life is unpredictable. A holistic approach means giving yourself grace and adapting when necessary. If you miss a day or a week, it’s not a failure. Simply adjust and keep going.

More recently, I planned to journal daily but missed one day, then another and another. Instead of giving up, I reminded myself that progress isn’t about perfection. I adjusted my goal to a few times a week, and it became a sustainable habit.

6. Celebrate Small Wins

Celebrate progress, no matter how small. Acknowledging your efforts builds confidence and keeps you motivated.

A client of mine wanted to eat healthier but felt overwhelmed. We started with one simple goal: eating with her children at lunch. Celebrating that win gave her the confidence to gradually build a consistent routine for her and her family

A New Year, A New Mindset

This year, ditch the pressure of drastic resolutions. Instead, commit to small, intentional habits that align with your holistic wellness journey. By embracing this approach, you’ll not only create meaningful change but also enjoy the process.

Let 2025 be the year you embrace growth with grace, patience, and purpose. Here’s to a healthier, happier, and more balanced you!
